The Chicken Soup Shelter was established in 2007 after a tragic incident in which a member of the North London Jewish community collapsed in a synagogue and could not be resuscitated. It subsequently emerged that his collapse was a result of his not having eaten all day.
Our founder, Shloime Blonder, was shocked that in a city as affluent as London, someone could die as a result of something so simple as finding nothing to eat and resolved to stop it ever happening again.
The soup kitchen began as an informal arrangement operating out of a private house, providing one meal a day to a small group of needy people. Since then we have been continuously expanding, always looking for more ways to help more people, more effectively. As well as a large, comfortable soup kitchen, we also operate a meals on wheels programme, and provide financial support allowing people to buy their own food from local businesses.
