• No-one should have to resort to low-quality junk food for lack of an alternative
• No family should find access to food an obstacle to maintaining a happy family life
• No-one should be forced to eat alone on a regular basis

All of our projects are based on meeting these goals and we are always looking for ways to expand our range of services and help more people.

Help support our vital work

Shloimeh Blonder has been with The Chicken Soup Shelter since its founding in 2007, overseeing its growth from a makeshift organisation operating out of a residential basement into an operation running multiple projects with a budget of over £600,000 a year. Mr Blonder is responsible for day to day management of the soup kitchen, fundraising, and distributing funds on behalf of the trustees.

Abraham Barchorin – Trustee

Abraham Barchorin was a founding member of the The Chicken Soup Shelter and is passionate about helping the ‘invisible’ victims of poverty. He is a leading community activist and a trustee of a number of charities focusing on relief of poverty and social justice.

Pinchas Benedikt – Trustee

Pinchas Benedikt is a specialist in the field of education and plays an important role in supporting local children and young people through educational initiatives.

Joseph Margulies – Trustee

Joseph Margulies is a community activist who plays a leading role in advocating for children with special needs and mental health problems. He brings to The Chicken Soup Shelter an understanding of the special challenges face by families dealing with the effects of mental health crises.

Our founder, Shloime Blonder, was shocked that in a city as affluent as London, someone could die as a result of something so simple as finding nothing to eat and resolved to stop it ever happening again.

The soup kitchen began as an informal arrangement operating out of a private house, providing one meal a day to a small group of needy people. Since then we have been continuously expanding, always looking for more ways to help more people, more effectively. As well as a large, comfortable soup kitchen, we also operate a meals on wheels programme, and provide financial support allowing people to buy their own food from local businesses.

Our soup kitchen serves hot meals to needy people six days a week, all year round. However, there are some people who cannot always make it to our location or for whom the soup kitchen is not an appropriate environment. For this reason, we deliver the same meals that we prepare every day in the soup kitchen to a wide range of people from across the Jewish community, including:

• Families who lack the time or resources to prepare their own meals, but still wish to eat together as family.
• Elderly people with mobility issues or health problems that prevent them from getting out in the evenings.
• Anyone who, for whatever reason, does not want to come to the soup kitchen, but nevertheless needs a hot, nutritious meal.

One of our most important projects at The Chicken Soup Shelter is supporting families who are experiencing a crisis, and need extra help to ensure that their family life does not unravel. We help dozens of widows and orphans, as well as families where a parent is suffering a mental health crisis or has become suddenly unemployed.

The subsidies that we provide to these families give them the ability to maintain a dignified family life during these upheavals. When families in crisis have the security of knowing that the costs of food and decent accommodation are covered, they have the space to take the action they need to improve their situation. Intervention at crisis points is often instrumental in helping families stay together, avoiding untold pitfalls in future years.

In addition to the practical support that this programme provides to widows, orphans, and families in crisis, they are also consoled by the knowledge that they are not alone. Experiencing support from others helps these suffering people to look forward to the future with hope.
